Still wonderful weather.  Overcast and foggy in the mornings and temperatures in the low 80s or upper 70s.  Chance of rain by Saturday and a definite cool down too.  Temperatures in the mid to upper 60s Saturday through Monday.  Next week back into the mid 70s.

More of the same with the generation schedule.  If you want to wade, get here in the a.m.  They are supposed to turn on the generators today at noon.  A little earlier than we have been seeing.

Carolyn on the water Monday with JP and his father, George, from Kansas.  We had a great morning especially with the size 18 ruby midge.  We also caught some on the P&P and copper dun, but ruby was our best pattern.  JP caught his first brown.    Unfortunately, at 1:00 p.m.

they turned on three units and it blew us off the river.  Not too much action after that.  Oh well, we had a great morning.  Stan out with Jim and Terry from Oklahoma.  They too have a very good morning on the P&P and stripping a holographic green crackleback.  They are scheduled to go out again tomorrow.  We’re hoping for a repeat day!  Fishing wise, not blow out on generation!!

Great weather last week with temperatures in the 80s and lots of sunshine. We did get some much needed rain on Saturday and it left us with temperatures in the 70s through the weekend and into Monday. Next week, they are predicting low 80s with little chance of rain until possible Friday.. In the meantime, sunny to partly sunny every day.

Generation schedule continues to be wader friendly. One unit on last yesterday for an hour and the same plan again today. We will get more water tomorrow afternoon. The schedule is pretty typical of what we have experienced the past two weeks. No units in the morning and then one around 1:00-:00 p.m., ramping up to two or three within the hour. Generally, they have been staying on 5-6 hours and then back off for the night.

Wednesday, Stan took Jerry and his son-in-law, Dennis out for half a day. Jerry is brand new, so Stan worked with him a little on casting and then catching. It was not a fast and furious day, but they certianly caught a respectible number of fish on the P&P midge and the holographic green crackleback.

We haven’t seen Jack and Carol from Oklahoma for about five years. But, they decided they needed to fish Taneycomo, so they took a half day float with Stan last Thursday. Slow start in the a.m., but picked up a bit and they caught fish on the P&P and ruby midges.

Peggy (aka Pyro), one of the gals in the RRWFF Club is moving to Texas next month, so a small group of us had a fishing party on Thursday to see her off.  Fun day for all of us.  She is going to miss fishing Taneycomo but will soon break in some of the salt water fishing available on the Texas coasts.  We wish her well and hope she comes back to fish with us when she get the need for a trout fishing fix.  All us gals, Lou (aka Let’s Go), Sharon (aka Joker), Gina (aka Trout Mum, and Carolyn (aka Happy Hooker), had a good day on the P&P midge, ruby midge, hot hare nymph, various streamer patterns, and the San Juan worms on the rise.   How about this beautiful brown caught on a ruby midge? 

Friday, Jeff and Ara, from Tennessee spent all day on the water with Stan.  Another slow start in the a.m, but once they got fired up, it was a good day for these guys on the P&P and ruby midges.    Carolyn also on the water with Sonya, from Texas and Tom, from the Kansas City area.  This was Sonya’s first time in the water with a fly rod.  She is going to be a good fly fishers.  Great roll cast and her regular cast is coming right along.  It was not fast and furious for us, but we did catch fish on the ruby midge, P&P midge, a size 20 gray scud and had several hits stripping the CQ streamer.  

Today was a good day for Chuck from Colorado.  He spent the morning on the water with Stan.  Lots of misses, plus lots of hits and hook-ups.  He caught this nice 18 inch rainbow on an egg pattern.  Several other fish on the P&P midge.

Wow!  What beautiful fishing weather.  Temperatures in the upper 70s or low 80s, sunny and a light (well maybe a little more in the afternoons) winds.  Looks like more of the same into the weekend.  By the weekend, we do have a chance of moisture, but at this time, it doesn’t look to be a big chance.  Next week looks like more nice weather.

Generation pattern continues to give the waders lots of wading time.  The only limited wading day we have seen for a while was Sunday when they ran a lot one unit.  Even this, however, didn’t hurt the fishing for those fisher who found access and fished. 

Saturday, Stan and Carolyn two out two couples from northeast Missouri.  Stan took the guys, Pete and Doug, and Carolyn took the ladies, Susan and Terri.  For the most part, all were new to fly fishing as it had years since Pete had picked up a fly rod.  Terri and Doug had never fly fished, and Susan had thrown a rod in her back yard.  What a fun, day for everyone.  Susan and Terri think they are in love with fly fishing!  Didn’t take long for Doug to get the hang of it and he was throwing a great line and pulling the holographic green crackleback and catching fish. Pete hooked this nice brown on a P&P (we think) midge.   The ladies were fishing the P&P midge and hooking, catching and, of course, missing fish all morning.  I think we also threw in the copper dun midge for a little while when the P&P slowed down. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Monday, Joanna and Wanda spent the morning with Carolyn.  Very good day for this two ladies from Lockwood, MO.  They both have fly fished for many years and love it.  They both caught a lot of fish on the copper dun and P&P midges. 

 

 

 

 

 

Great weather we have been having.  Best of all, looks like we have more in store, at least, until next weekend.  Right now, the forecast is for temperatures in the mid to upper 70s through Wednesday.  Then, a couple days in the low 80s, and back into the 70s for the weekend, with slight chances for showers.

Taney has been pretty consistent with no generation in the a.m. and 3-4 hours in the afternoon starting around 2:00 p.m.  The exception was last Thursday when they ran water all day.  And, again today, they are running a low one unit.  Projection for tomorrow is back to no generation in the a.m. and something in the afternoon.

Boats on the water almost every day this past week.  Last weekend, we hosted another Orvis 301 clinic which was sponsored by the Orvis store in Leawood, Kansas.  Great couple of days of learning and catching experience for everyone.  Both Saturday and Sunday, everyone caught lots of fish on almost everything we threw at them:  black/copperhead midge, black/silverhead midge, #12 olive wooly bugger, CQ streamer, soft hackles,  P&P midge. ruby midge….we tried them all.  Best fish for the weekend was an 18 inch rainbow caught by Phl.  I think he was from north of Kansas City near the race track.  In the midst of all our 301 clinic chaos, Dana had Thomas and Jim, from Tennessee, on the water for the day.  Good day for these guys on the rusty midge, a peach egg pattern and a #16 chartreuse egg pattern.

 

Monday, Gina took Donna, from Oklahoma out for half a day.  Donna is a fly fishing lady, but had never been in a drift boat.  Good day for Donna on the #12 olive bugger and the CQ streamer.  Carolyn was taking Pam and Joe, from Texas, through the first day of a two-day fly fishing school.  This was the classroom in the morning and casting in the afternoon day. 

Tuesday, it was to the water for Pam and Joe.  We did manage to get into a few fish on Tuesday, but it was tough.  Probably one of the tougher days I’ve seen for quite a while.  But, they pulled streamers, midged and even worked soft hackle a little.   

Stan took Wayne and Robert, from Kansas out on Wednesday.  They had a great day on the copper dun midge.   Both Wednesday and Thursday, Jim had Wayne and Colleen, from Hawaii out all day.  Good days for these guys.  Probably did better Thursday and Wednesday on the red midge, black midge and a size 8 CQ streamer.

Thursday, Tom and Marge, from California spent half a day on the water with Carolyn.  These two have been fishing with us since 2004 and are a hoot to fish with.  Tom was celebrating his 79th birthday.  Happy Birthday Tom!  Stan had Luanne and Glenn from here in Missouri out for half a day.  Luanne is the fly fisher in the family, but Glenn is beginning to like it also.  They had a good day on the copper dun midge.  Luanne wanted to learn the stripping technique, so Stan fixed her up with the sinking leader and a holographic green crackleback and they also caught fish on this. 

 

 

 

Had a little rain most of the morning this past Monday.  Tuesday was a nice, overcast, slightly windy day with temps. in the 80s.  Today is partly sunny and temperatures in the mid 80s.  Upper 80s are predicted for tomorrow, again with party sunny skies.  Friday looks like a pretty good chance of rain.  From Friday through the weekend, mid 70s are called for.  Upper 70s and into the low 80s next week and very little chance of moisture.

Same pattern on generation that we have seen for the past two weeks.  Off most of the weekends.  Maybe a unit on for 1-2 hours late in the day and then back off.  No generation in the morning during the week, but one, two or three units coming on anywhere from 1:00 p.m. on.  Usually, by 1:00.

Last Wednesday, Darrell had Mel and Larry out for half a day.  Good day for

 

Thursday, Darrell took Larry out again, this time, with Al.  Very good day for these guys on the P&P, and when the water came on, the #16 brown worm under the big ruby midge. 

 Carolyn had Mike and Jan out again on Thursday, and they also had a great day.  Good quality fish for both Darrell’s guys on this day as well as Carolyn’s      

 

nice 20 inch rainbow.  Best patterns for Jan and Mike were the size 18 ruby and P&P midges, and a size 12 olive wooly bugger.   Stan had Steve, from the St. Louis area, out for the day.  Not as good a day for them.  They boated some fish on the P&P and ruby midges. 

It has been a week of great days, good days and “where’s the fish” days.  Places where you are smoking them one day will produce nothing but frustration the next day.  Guess that is why they call it fishing!

 

Looks like nice weather ahead. Temperatures in the 80s through the weekend. Chance of showers Monday and again on Wednesday. Weather today was beautiful! Low 80s and sunny. Just enough wind to give us a little chop on the water.

The generation pattern is also great. No generation today except for a low one unit at 6:000 p.m. for one hour. Same thing for tomorrow. Monday looks like no generation until noon, when one unit will come on, then another in an hour, with about two units going four 3-4 hours. I kind of expect pretty much the same pattern next week as we have seen the past two weeks. No units in the a.m. then something in the afternoon.

Monday, the Bad Dan Shultz Gang hit Taneycomo. When we last looked, other than lots of sore lip trout, not too much damage was done. This neat group consisted of fathers and sons, brothers, and just life-long friends who have been fishing together for many years. If I remember correctly, the age range was from 87 to 59. It was a slow start for everyone in the morning. However, by the afternoon and drifting downstream a ways, it quickly turned into a great catching day for everyone. Dana had Joe and Arn. They did well on the little ruby, the P&P and copperhead black zebra midges. Stan’s guys, “Dutch” and “Bad Dad” had a great day on the P&P and little ruby midges. Tom and Steve, who were with Darrell, were also catching on the little ruby and the P&P midges.

On Tuesday, Jim took Jim and Elizabeth out for half a day. Jim is a fairly new fly fisher so Jim worked with him on techniques. They worked and caught fish on the size 12 olive wooly bugger and the P&P midge with a blood worm dropper. Elizabeth enjoyed the morning.
Carolyn had Jan and Mike out for the day. This was the first day of their two day fishing. They have both been in Hungary for two years and this was one of the first things to do when they got back to the States. This was a good day for both of them. Jan did especially well on the ruby midge. Mike caught several on the size 12 olive wooly bugger. Once they turned on the water, it was the big ruby with a red San Juan dropper. Jan didn’t miss a drift almost without a hit or fish.

Weather is pretty warm. 90s today and again tomorrow. Thursday is supposed to start cooling down a little; into the upper 80s, then mid to low 80 by next week. Even a slight chance rain by next Monday.

The generation pattern continues to be off in the a.m. until 2:00 p.m or better, then 2-3 units turned on for just a few hours.

Saturday, Stan took Tom and Bob out just about 30 minutes before they fired up three units. The guys were in a meeting all morning but wanted to get in some fishing time. Tough time with the heavy, dirty water, but they managed to pull out a few fish on the big ruby midge on a quick float. They also had to be off the water earlier than normal.

Steve and Jim, from California spent most of the day on the water with Stan Sunday. Good day for these guys on the copper dun & P&P midges. The water stayed off until 3:00 p.m. and they rowed back up to the put-in and called it a day.

Carolyn had Michael and Gina, also from Texas, out for a half day wade trip. This was Gina’s first fly

fishing expedition. Gotta say, she did outfish Michael. But, in Michael’s defense, Gina got all the help. Michael hooked a couple on a size 12 BH olive bugger. The midge patterns were switching back and forth based on the fog. When the fog rolled in, copper dun. When the fog lifted, P&P. Gina also caught a couple on a red holographic crackleback stripping it in the shallows.

Pretty warm days we have been having. Mid 90s expecting through Thursday. Forecast right now is for mid to low 80s through next weekend and into the following week.

Generation pattern has been pretty much no generation in the morning. One unit for an hour, then two to three units coming on after that for four to five hours. So far, the earliest the first unit has come on is 1:00 p.m., usually 2:00-3:00 p.m. Really a mess when the units come on. Lots of algae and other gunk in the water.

Fishing has been up and down the past several days. Stan on the water with Rick from Illinois last Tuesday. Good half day for Rick on the olive CQ streamer, holographic green crackleback and the P&P midge. Jim had a couple new fly fishers, Eric and Joni, from California. They got off to a good start. Learned the basic and caught fish on the P&P and rusty midges, and stripping a size 12 olive bugger.

Wednesday, Darrell had Malcolm from the St. Louis area on the river all day. Malcolm can throw a stick and they had a good day pulling the CQ streamer. When the water came on they changed out to the big ruby and pulled fish most of the drift out.

Stan took Marty our for half a day Thursday. Hoot of a day for her. She loves to fly fish, especially dries. Well you know the story on dries on Taney. They did have a few opportunities on both dries and soft hackles, but the bulk of the fish were caught on the P&P midge.

Bruce and Kathy, from Texas, fished with Jim on Friday. Pretty good day on the P&P midge and blood worm dropper. They also caught some on the olive wooly bugger. Carolyn had Sam, also from Texas, out for the morning. Sam throws a good stick too and caught some on the CQ streamer. But, it was not a real good streamer day, so we changed out to the P&P midge and had a pretty good day.

Sam didn’t get enough on Friday, so he spent a few more hours on the water with Carolyn on Saturday. In the short period of time we had, it wasn’t a bad day, but the ruby midge was the best pattern on Saturday. Did pull a few on the CQ. Jim took Fred and Julie out for half a day. They wanted to learn a little about where and how to fish Taney. Good day for them on the copper dun midge with a size 20 gray scud. Also caught some on a size 12 BH olive wooly.

We did have the warmer temperatures over the weekend, but standing in the water, it was pleasant. Today, we are expecting 80s. This will creep up so that by the weekend, we will be in the low 90s. Very little chance for moisture currently showing up in the forecasts with temperatures back into the 80 next week.

Wonderful! The past seven days, we have seen no generation in the mornings. Last week, they would crank up 2-3 units for 5-7 hours in the afternoon. Over the weekend, they only ran the equivalent of one unit for 1-2 hours. Yee ha! Lots of time to fish!

Last really tough day we have seen was last Thursday, Stan had Bryan from Texas on the water for half a day. Flat, clear water required 7X on midging. It was a black zebra with the copper head midge morning.

Friday, Jim took Chris and his son, Garrett out for half a day. Garrett is new to fly fishing (ten years old), so Jim put a size 12 olive wooly bugger on Chris and sent him on his way while he worked with Garrett. Dad was catching them on the wooly bugger and once Chris got the hang of it, it caught some on the P&P with a blood worm dropper.

Larry, from Kansas, spent Saturday morning on the water with Stan. Good day for Larry on the P&P midge and stripping a holographic green crackleback.
I fished Saturday and eventually, Debbie from Springfield showed up and fished with me until the generators came on. We had a great, fun day catching on the holographic green crackleback and the size 8, olive CQ streamer. We were fishing both of these on the 2.6 ips sinking leader. Lots of nice quality fish.

Sunday, Mike, from Texas, fished with Stan. He had just finished the 1-day school at Dogwood and wanted to get some practical experience. Brushed off a few cob webs and he had a very good day on the black zebra midge with the copper head as well as stripping a size 14 olive wooly bugger on a sinking leader. It rained off and on (mostly on) that morning, but catching made that a mute point.
