Ketchup Time Again!!

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

Let’s try something new!  Zero chances of rain tomorrow.  However, slight chances come back on Tuesday through Friday, and they are projecting at this time, zero chances for Saturday, with 60-70% chances by Sunday and Monday.

No generation during the morning hours and water coming on around 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. each afternoon.  Would not be too bad, but they have actually run four generators many days and that really trashes up the water!  Off until 2:00 both today and projected the same for tomorrow.

Way behind in trips.  Ron and Sharon on the water with Carolyn last Saturday.  Good day for Sharon on the CQ streamer on the sinking leader.   We also caught some on the holographic green crackleback stripping it subsurface in the shallow water.  Not a great day, we caught several fish and had a great time!   Jim had Ray and Cameron, from Texas out for half a day.  Cameron is pretty new to fly fishing, so Jim worked with him a little.  They caught fish on the rusty midge, blood worm and hot hare’s ear nymph.

Sunday, Stan took Drs. Jim & Jack from Springfield out for the day.  These two are new to fly fishing, so it was a learning curve with knots, casting, mending, and all that other neat stuff that goes with fly fishing….including bring in a good number of fish.  Patterns were the size 12 big ruby (2 units at put in and 2 more before they got off the river), P&P and crackleback.

Jim took one of his regulars, Dwan out for half a day on Monday.  Pull a good number of fish on the rusty midge and micro scud.

Belinda - 6/25/14

Belinda – 6/25/14

Tuesday, Stan and Carolyn took two couple out for the morning.  Of course, Carolyn took the ladies, Belinda and Laura and Stan had the guys, Barry and Joe.  Don’t know about the guys, but us gals had a good time.  Best pattern was the holographic green crackleback on the sinking leader for both of the ladies.  Belinda also caught a couple nice fish on the copper dun midge.

Laura - 6/24/14

Laura – 6/24/14

Jim also on the water Tuesday.  He had tom and Nancy from Independence out for the day.  Fished tough, but they brought in several fish a variety of patterns.  As Jim said, “fished everything, no good one pattern”.

Jackson - 6/25/14

Jackson – 6/25/14

Wednesday, Stan had David and Jackson out for half a day.  They wanted a full day, but the way the generators have been trashing the water when it comes on, we encouraged they to take a half day.  After they saw the water when it came on, they were happy with this decision.  David has been on several guide trip and he finally caught his first trout on a fly rod!  Good day for these new fly fishers on the copper dun and Lil ruby midges and the holographic green crackleback.  Darrell also out with a father-son duo, Tim and Nathan.  They had a good day on the copper dun and black zebra midges.

Fishing is slower than normal for this time of the year.  Yes, you will catch some fish if you stick with it, change patterns enough times or find that special spot where they are feeding.  Some days they hit best pulling streamers, next day they will only take midges, scuds or some other patterns.  Don’t complain.  We are spoiled as fishing is generally much better here than many of the other places we fish!

Whole Lotta Fishing Going On!

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

Days have been pretty warm to down right hot!  Almost every day has had a chance for showers and some days we would get a few sprinkles and some days not.  Continued warm through the week, with temperatures moving into the 90 by the weekend.  Of course, we have a chance for showers every day until next week when it looks like zero chances for a few days.

No generation almost every morning last week.  Yesterday was the exception as they ran water almost all day and a lot of it yesterday afternoon.  It is off this morning, as projected, and should come on around 3:00 this afternoon.  We are at power pool, so we might see the same pattern this week as last….off during the morning and coming on some time in the afternoon.  Will have a better feel for this later today when we see tomorrow’s projection.

Lots of trips over the past several days.  Last Wednesday, Stan had Ron and his son, Brian out for half a day.  Good day for these guys on the copper dun, fire fly and P&P.  Jim had Ed and Don, from Arizona out all day.  They had a good day pulling the CQ streamer.   Jeff and Aaron fished with Darrell.  The big ruby was their bug for the trip.

Thursday, a couple guys from Oklahoma, Lynn and Jason spent the morning with Jim.  Pretty good day on the CQ streamer, the copper dun midge and a blood worm.  Stan had Gary and Bob, also from Oklahoma, out for the first day.  They went out again on Friday.  Good day for these two on the copperhead black midge, copper dun and P&P midges.

We emptied the shop Friday.  Dana had Fred and Ruth from Texas out for the morning.  P&P and crackleback for these fishers.  Carolyn took Wanda.  Almost all her fish were on the blood worm dropped under the peach fur bug and a few on the copper dun midge.  Mike from Oklahoma had the morning with Jim.  P&P, blood worm and hot hare’s ear were their patterns.  Darrell and Gina had a group from Texas.  Karl floated with Darrell and they did best on the P&P midge.  Marsha and Bonnie were with Gina.  They were throwing the copper dun & P&P midges.  Marsha’s brand new to fly fishing and it was Bonnie’s second time .

Slower Than Normal

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014

Still see chances for rain in the forecast through the coming weekend and into next week…..30-40%.  Temperatures seem to be hanging in the upper 80 to lower 90 range.

No generation last weekend, but they certainly dumped some water Monday and Tuesday.  Peaked out both days with over 12,000 cubic feet per second before noon.  Today they projected a higher flow than we are experiencing.  Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel?

Stan on the water last Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Richard and Susan from Kansas.   Brand new fly fishers who wanted to learn everything they could about fly fishing.  They certainly experienced the variety of water flows we get here on Taneycomo.  Fun days for these two learning and catching.

Saturday, Dawn and Carolyn spent the day throwing the holographic green crackleback and stripping it just under the surface.  This was probably our best pattern of the day.  It was not fast and furious, but pretty consistent.  Just before the generator came on in the afternoon, the hot hare’s ear nymph under the black copprhead midge or an apricot egg pattern were the ticket.

Newly weds from Kansas, Daniel and Rachael, spent Tuesday morning out with Stan.  First time for her and it had been a while for him.  Fun day for these two on the big ruby midge even with 3 units and when they started and 4 units before they got off the water!

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014

So far, this is our first day without rain for several days.  Only 10% chance today, but looking at the sky, I’m getting worried.  80% chance for rain tomorrow.  Friday and Saturday look pretty safe with temperatures in the 80s.  By Sunday, slight chances are back into the picture for a couple days.  Can’t believe my eyes right now.  I see “O” chances from next Wednesday through Friday!…..to be continued.

Of course, with all this rain, you can guess what the water has been doing.  Ran all day Sunday, off for a little while early Monday and we have seen non-stop since then.  We are slightly above power pool right now, so MAYBE in a couple days we might see low or no generation?!?

Had a few slower than we have been experiencing days fishing last week.  Last Wednesday, Darrell had Don and Dennis out for half a day.  They caught fish on the black copperhead and P&P midges.  Couple new fly fishers, Josh and Jessica, went out with Stan.  Missed as many as they caught on the P&P and copper dun midges.  At least it was not raining!!!

Last Saturday was a bummer day!  Schedule said zero generation, so Dana and Carolyn took a group of four guys who were here for a wedding out for a wade trip.

6/7/14

6/7/14

I think we had guys from both the east coast and the west coast.  We had no sooner gotten through learning the roll cast and started working on the pick up and lay down cast when a horn blew.  Okay guys, get in the boats.  Despite the ups and downs…..literally, it was a fun day.  The red midge, CQ, crackleback and black midge under the big ruby were the bugs for the morning.

Amit - 6/7/14

Amit – 6/7/14

Jim was out with Scotty and Rizzo.  He was grunching too because of the fluctuation of the water.  They caught fish, mainly on the CQ streamer, but it certainly was not one of his better days!

We have now had several days of pretty steady generation.  this should have the fish moved in to their normal holding patterns for the high water.  Unfortunately, about the time they do this, they’ll turn the generators off.  Oh well, that’s life in a tailwater!!

Good Days Out Number The Tough Days!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2014

Will these “spring rains” ever quit?  80% chance for showers tomorrow.  Temps ranging from low 80s down to upper 70s by Sunday into Monday.  Every day has a chance for showers.  Although tomorrow and next Friday seem to be the biggest chances.  So far, they have not been real heavy rains, but enough to get you wet!

Generators off every day until 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  I think they are scheduled to come on today at 2:00 p.m.   Nice trend.  Better get out and enjoy it.

We seem to be having a run of several very good days of fishing followed by one or two tough days.  You’ll catch some fish on the tough days, but certainly not the numbers you can get on the very good days.  I guess that’s why it is called fishing.

Carolyn had Peter and JoDee on the water last Friday on one of those tough days.  It was one of those days where there was absolutely no water movement.  The water was so still there was a film on the surface.  We finally found a little moving water and hit the jackpot with a hot hare’s ear nymph.  Can’t let this happen….on came the horn and the water started rolling with all kinds of junk in it.  Did find a clean spot at Lookout Island for a little while and pulled out a few more on the holographic green crackleback.

Fortunately, Sunday was a much better day.  Several fishers had registered for the Orvis 301 program offered by their Leawood, Kansas store.  Neat program where they spend the day on the water with a guide, learn a little and catch some fish.  Darrell had Trent and Dan.  Very good day for these guys on the black coperhead midge, P&P and a black zebra midge.  Gina had Jim and Rob.  Good day for these guys, on the same midges plus an egg pattern with a midge dropper.  They also worked on stripipng buggers, crackleback, filoplume and soft hackles.   Jim worked with Paul and

Rob - 6/1/14

Rob – 6/1/14

and Leo.  They did well on the CQ streamer or a black midge with a blood worm dropper.  Craig fished with Stan.  It was the P&P and black copperhead midge for them.  All in all, everyone had a great day!   Monday, Jim took a couple of his regulars, Price and Marg out.  It seems that for the past 2-3 years, when they come, it always rains.  This year was no exception.  They spent the morning fishing in the rain, but the good news was it was another catching day.  CQ streamer, copper dun, blood worm dropper and the hot hare’s ear nymph.Stan had Doug, from Texas, out in the rain.  Very good day for Doug on the black copperhead and P&P midges.  Kathi and Bill, from Kansas, fish with Gina on Tuesday.  Pretty good day for these guys on the P&P, black copperhead midge and peach king egg.  It was a

Kathi - 6/3/14

Kathi – 6/3/14

bit tough in the early morning as the water was flat again, but they persevered and caught fish!  Stan took Gary and Jerry from Ohio out for half a day.  Very good day for these guys on pretty much the same patterns.

Lots of Wading Opportunities!

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

Not much change in the weather.  Still looking at 80s through the weekend and into next week.  Also still looking at chances for showers almost every day except next Monday and Tuesday.  We have not had as much rain as we thought we might have the past few days.  Sprinkles for a little while yesterday and again today.

Lots of opportunity to get out there and do some wade fishing.  Water off today until 2:00 p.m. and it is projected to be off again tomorrow.  One unit coming on at 2:00 p.m. for four hours.

Jim out Sunday with a couple young men from Oklahoma, Preston and Grayson.  Both new to fly fishing and wanted to learn how.  As you can imagine, Jim took them through the paces.  They were plum tuckered out when then came back to the shop.  He also let them catch a few fish on the CQ streamer, ruby midge and the hot hare’s ear.

Tuesday, Mike from Iowa spent the morning on the river with Stan again.  They were out Sunday and had a great day, and Tuesday was more of the same.  Great day on the copper dun and copperhead black midges.  Jeff and Jim, from Wisconson spent the day with Jim.  Very good day for these guys.  Jim was pretty new so Jim worked with him on casting and technique.  They caught a lot of fish, including a nice 18″ rainbow on the CQ, copper dun midge and blood worm dropper.

Mike & 19" Bow - 5/28/14

Mike & 19″ Bow – 5/28/14

Mike and Ethan spent Wednesday morning on the river with Stan.  Ethan has been fly fishing a pond at home with his fly rod for blue gill and other warm water fish.  This was both of their first experiences fly fishing for trout.  Learned the importance of mending and how quickly the trout “hit and run” before you realize you just had a hit.  Very good day for these guys on the black copperehead midge early in the day and then the copper dun later into the morning and early afternoon.

Ethan and 1st trout on fly rod - 5/28/14

Ethan and 1st trout on fly rod – 5/28/14

This was Ethan’s first trout on a fly rod followed by many more.  Dad did welll catching a nice 19″ rainbow.

The Bite Was Certainly On!

Sunday, May 25th, 2014

Got some rain yesterday afternoon around 2:00 p.m.  The guys who were on the water might say we got “a lot of rain”.  It did dump for a little while.  Beautiful, sunny day today.  Chances for an isolated afternoon storm possible.  Still forecasting 80s through all of next week and into the weekend with chances of showers scattered throughout the entire time.

One low unit running today, as projected.  No generation Monday except for one unit late in the day.  Tuesday’s projection is no generation until 2:00 p.m. when one unit will come on for a couple hours, then two units for a couple hours.

The bite was certainly on yesterday.  Jim had Aaron and his son Will out for half a day.  Great day for these buys on the CQ streamer, Copper dun and blood worm dropper.  Mike from Iowa spent half a day with Stan.  It was the copperhead black zebra in the early morning switching to the copper dun as it brightened up and fish on all day.  They only lost one fly and that one was in a nice fish that kept going south.

Fishing Good Until They Fire Up A Unit

Saturday, May 24th, 2014

Temperatures in the 80s with chances of showers almost every day through next Friday.  Best chances today are this evening.   Still looks like next Tuesday and Wednesday are the strongest chances for showers.  Overcast off and on today, but so far. no moisture.

We are still seeing no generation in the mornings with a unit coming on atound 1:00 p.m.  Projections for Sunday is a low one unit.  Monday it will be off almost all day and Tuesday will go back to the no units until early afternoon.

Travis and Katie from Michigan fished with Jim Wednesday.  Good day for these two on the CQ, copper dun midge and blood worm.  Fortunately, they got off the water before the generators came on.  Carolyn had Joan, from Kansas out all day.  Joan with fish 052114Very good day for Joan on the black copperhead and copper dun midges.  On came one unit, so we  broke for lunch.  Cleared up and we proceeded to catch some more fish and then the second unit came on.  Well that was it for the day.  You would not drift over five feet before junk was all over the flies.  Bummer!

Thursday, Barry and Kristy from Oklahoma fished with Carolyn.  They started fishing Taneycomo about one year ago and wanted some pointers on how to fish it.  Hopefully, we accomplished this.  Couple different techniques, different places to fish, worked on Barry with fish 52314presentation, a little casting work, and a pretty good catching day…..that is until a unit came on.  Fortunately, we were just about ready to wrap up the day.

Fun day!!

Don’t Mess With Texas!

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

Weather for the coming week looks pretty good.  Temperatures in the 80s through next weekend.  We do have slight chances for showers sprinkled through the coming week.  Best chance looks like Tuesday.

Generation off the past two days during the morning hours.  One unit on at 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. then ramping up to two then three units.  Projection for tomorrow is more of the same.

Denise - 5/18/14

Denise – 5/18/14

Sunday was another floatilla day.  A group from Texas decided to get one more thing off their “bucket list”….fly fishing.  Carolyn drew the “wild bunch”, Denise and Bev.  What a hoot.  Anyone within a mile probably heard Denise catch her first rainbow on a fly rod.  So much for the quiet sport!  Another break in the quiet sport when Bev caught her first fish on a fly rod.

Bev - 5/18/14

Bev – 5/18/14

The ladies best fly was a size 16 black midge dropped under the big ruby.  Jim had Bev’s husband Rick.  They had a good day on the CQ streamer, ruby midge and the hot hare’s ear.  Vicki and Ron were with Dana.  It was the red midge and a size 14 P&P midge for them.  Last, but not least, Heidi and Mark were with Darrell.

Heidi - 5/18/14

Heidi – 5/18/14

Heidi was certainly excited with her first fish on a fly rod too.  They were using the black copperhead midge under the red midge.  What a day!!   Todd from Kansas City spent the day with Stan.  No best pattern for them, but theycaught a few fish on almost every pattern he tried, and he kept changing.

Tuesday, Stan had Bruce from Louisiana out for the day.  Good day for Bruce on the black copperhead midge and stripping the holographic green crackleback.  Connie and David fished with Carolyn a couple weeks ago and brought their daughter, Jennifer for her turn on Tuesday.  So Carolyn took  Connie and Jennifer out for half a day.

Jennifer - 5/20/14

Jennifer – 5/20/14

Good job Jennifer.  Did not take her long to to hook up with a nice 17″ rainbow.  Before the day was over, all three, Connie, David and Jennifer were pulling in fish on the holographic green crackleback.   Good day and great family.

Catch Up Time!

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014

Windy was the word for today.  Looks like tomorrow will be in the upper 80s or low 90s with 10 to 15 mph wind.  About the same for Thursday.  Very slight chance of rain Friday with temps in the upper 80s.  80s seem to be the norm for the weekend into Monday.  Chances for rain increase Tuesday and really look likely for Wednesday and Thursday of next week.  Temps holding in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Generation has been pretty stable for several days.  15 to 20 mwh with water levels holding in the 704 range.  However, this afternoon, they cranked it up to 185 mwh with a level of  709.6.  Really glad to see this much water as we  need some  heavy water to flush the aglae off the bottom.  Looking forward to seeing the water tomorrow.  Projection for tomorrow is no generation until 1:00 when they wil turn on one unit, then a low two for an hour, and finally a low four units for 1-2 hours.

Lots of trips for the past week,  Going to try and catch up.  Jime on the water last Tuesday with Dave and his son, Jake.  Good day for the guys on the CQ streamer.  One of the cold days we had this month.

Another cold day Wednesday when Jim had Tom, from Minnesota our for the day.  Probably felt like a Spring day for Tom.  Good day for Tom on the CQ streamer and red midge.  Shiver…rained off and on all day!

Thursday was definitely warmer when Stan took Mike from Parkville out for half a day.  Very good day for Mike on the ruby midge with the P&P dropper.

Friday, Jim took David and David, from Oklahoma out for their second day.  They fished with him all day Thursday and again on Friday for half a day.  A couple of great days for these guys on the CQ, ruby midge, hot hare’s ear, and copper dun.  Stan had Bill and Mike, from Indiana, out for the day.  Very good day for these guys mainly on the big ruby with the copper dun midge dropper.

Sandy - 5/17/15

Sandy – 5/17/15

Carolyn took Sandy and Bryan from Oklahoma out on Saturday.  Good day for this two,  on the black midge dropped from the big ruby.

Overall, it has been fishing good.  We had a day or two out of a week where it is slower.  Seemed like the fish were bunched up.  You’ll catch several in an area and then a long dry spell.  Overall, however, I have to say fishing is good.  Generation schedule has been pretty consistent with a low one unit.  Not too bad for wading, but certainly not ideal conditions.
