Heat Wave Is Coming!

Monday, January 12th, 2015

So far, we have dodged the bullet with this rainy/icy weather forecast.  Yesterday and today we were under a wintery conditions alert and actually, it has not been too bad.  In the 30 degree area with little wind.  It actually was not too bad out yesterday and today is definitely okay.  Especially for this time of year!  However, the weather forecast for this coming Friday through the weekend is calling for 50 degree days!   A heat wave!  An no moisture is in the forecast.  Dust off that fly rod……

Non-stop generation for at least the past 7 days.  Some of it has been fairly low, but they have also run enough to raise the level to 708 feet or better in the tailwater.

Few folks out fishing the past few days…..not many.  But for those who are fishing, reports are that the fish are cooperating.  Yesterday was on nothing in particular, but almost anything you fished.

Yes, The Polar Bear Women Were On The Water!

Tuesday, January 6th, 2015

Today will probably be the warmest day of the week.  Single digit might be the case tomorrow night!  Is it Spring yet!

Thank you, we had very little generation from New Years day through Sunday.  They turned it on late Sunday and we have had some level of generation since then  Scheduled to run something all day today.

New Years Day there were seven crazy women from the River Runners Women’s Fly Fishing Club standing in the river having a blast.  Fishing was not fast and furious, but certainly fast enough to keep all of us happy.  And it did…..we fished the 1st, the 2nd and part of the 3rd.  What a way to start the New Year ! ! ! !

What A New Years!!!!

What A New Years!!!!

Happy New Fishing Year!

Wednesday, December 31st, 2014

Looks like it is going to be pretty nippy last day of the year.  And, the first day of the New Year doesn’t look much better!  High in the low 30s with a slight chance for moisture.  Best chance for moisture looks like Saturday.  Periods of rain, but at least the temperatures will be in the low 40s…..let’s hope it gets that warm.

Generators were off yesterday from 10:00 a.m. until late afternoon.  Projection is about the same for today, but I don’t think they are scheduled to go off until 1100 a.m.  Who knows what they will do tomorrow!

Stan on the water last Friday with Russell from Oklahoma and his friend Dillen from Kansas City.  Good day for these guys on the black copperhead midge, copper dun, and a peach egg pattern.

Jim out Monday with Tom from Kansas City.  Tom wanted to get a feel for wade fishing this area.  One of those days when they did not stick to the projected schedule.  Didn’t turn the water off until noon, so they worked the water and managed to do some wade fishing at Lookout Island.  It was a black midge and the hot hare’s ear nymph day .

As 2014 comes to an end, we want to again say “Thank You!” to everyone who has made our year a success.  We thank you for your business and hope to see you and be of service again in 2015.

Please have a HAPPY, SAFE, AND FISHING NEW YEAR!

Caddis Says: “Merry Christmas!”

Sunday, December 21st, 2014

Hope we get to see the sun again some day.  It has been overcast for almost two weeks now… anyway, it certainly feels that way.  Otherwise though, the weather has not been too bad.  Temperatures in the 40s and light winds.  Pretty good for December.  Tomorrow looks like 50 but a chance for showers early in the day.  Christmas day looks like mid 50s and sunshine!?  Great Christmas present.  40s but dry for next weekend.

Pattern this past week was two to three units on each morning from :00-10:00 then off for six to seven hours.  No generation at all this weekend.  Monday’s projection looks like a repeat of this past week.

Bob - 12/20/14

Bob – 12/20/14

Good day yesterday  for Bob and Ann from Arkansas.  They spent the warmest part of the day on the water with Stan.  It was a copper head black midge and peach egg day.  Carolyn got to go fishing and put a smile on her face with the second cast of an olive filoplume on the 2.6 ips sinking leader.  Nice, fat rainbow.  Fish on everything she threw, mini sculpin, dark red crackleback, tiger tail (best) and olive JQ streamer.  Wonderful couple hours in the water!

Whoa! What did you put in that milk?!

Caddis wants to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a  Happy and Safe New Year!

All of us here at River Run Outfitters would like to chime in with her on that wish.  Thanks to everyone for your support and friendship this past year.   May your 2015 be full of as many days as you want standing in the water chasing those beautiful trout!

Still A Few Browns Around

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

Yukky weather!  Overcast and drizzle.  Good news, no wind and the temperatures might get into the upper 30s or low 40s for tomorrow and Saturday.  Maybe some moisture by early next week.  Christmas is almost here!

So far this week, they have had 2-3 generators on the the morning and off by 10:00 a.m.  Nothing except 20 cfs running for 6-7 hours and back on again.  Oh yes, they blew one horn yesterday at 11:00 a.m. and turned on one unit for a short period of time.  Just enough to get everyone’s attention, then they turned it off again !!!

Mike with beautiful brown

Mike with beautiful brown

We are still seeing some browns and the ones we are seeing are beautiful.  This one was caught by Mike a couple days ago.  One of the other local fisher, another Mike, showed me a picture of another one yesterday…..gorgeous!   I can’t remember when I have seen such beautiful brown trout!

Nice Weather for December!

Sunday, December 14th, 2014

The past two days were wonderful.  60x yesterday and again today.  However, as we know, all good things must come to an end.  Tomorrow doesn’t look too bad as it will be in the upper 50x and partly sunny.  Tuesday and Wednesday are projected in the mid 40s and by Thursday, upper 30s with chances for moisture.  Saturday might even see a few snow showers in the a.m.  But, back into the 40s by Sunday and into early next week

Generation has been all over the board the past few days.  Last Tuesday and Wednesday,  it was on in the morning, then off late morning so it was dropping out most of the day.  Since Thursday, we have had generation non-stop.  Today is wadeable, but it was a bit high (at least for me) yesterday.

Jim on the water last Tuesday with Derek from Illinois.  Despite the crazy water, they had a very good day on the JQ streamer, black midge and hot hare’s ear nymph.

Derek hit the water with Jim again on Wednesday.  Not as good as Tuesday, but certainly another good day on the black midge and hot hare’s ear nymph.

What was supposed to be the warmer day of the week last Thursday turned out to be cold, overcast and two units running.  Pat from California (weather shock for him)  spend half a day on the water with Stan.  Slow start, but they finally got into some fish and pulled off a good day on the big ruby and copperhead midge.  Also caught several on an egg pattern.

RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS FOR CHRISTMAS.  GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE ALWAYS A GOOD BET!

Good Days…..Tuff Days!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

We are seeing sunshine this morning!  Haven’t seen much of that for several days.  Partly sunny and 40s tomorrow.  50SA Thursday and Friday and maybe low 60s Saturday and Sunday.  No mention of moisture until late Sunday.  Look promising!

The bizarre generation pattern the past couple days has made catching tuff!  But, unfortunately, that’s life in a tailwater.  Today, along with the sunshine, they turned the generators off at 9:00 a.m.

Stan on the water last Saturday with Mac and Bob, from Kansas.  Despite the gray day and 40 degree temperature, it was a good fishing day for these guys on the big ruby with the black zebra midge dropper.  Jim had Kevin and Steve  out for the day.  They had a good day on the JQ streamer, red midge and red or brown San Juan worm droppers.

Sunday was supposed to have been a little nicer day, but that was a toss up.  Doc, from Oklahoma, spent the day on the water with Stan  Tougher day,  but they pulled several fish on the black midge.  Mac and Bob fished with Jim Sunday and they too had a little more challenge.  Best patterns were the JQ streamer, red midge, copper head black midge and red San Juan worm.

Jim out yesterday with dick from up in Springfield.  He wanted to work on techniques and did catch a few fish on nothing on particular.  Four units going when they started and it never really settled anywhere.  Lots of ups and downs all day.

I Know…I’m Behind On Fishing Conditions!!!

Sunday, November 30th, 2014

Great weather we have been having the past couple days, except for the WIND!  However, I think it is coming to a screeching halt tonight and into Monday.  Hit mid 70s today and the forecast for tomorrow’s high is 32 degrees!  Can you believe that!  Plus, we might get some periods of freezing drizzle in the a.m.  Good news is back into the 50s by Wednesday and possibly low 60s by the weekend.

Lots of wade time last Monday and a little time Tuesday afternoon.  Generation all day Wednesday and Thursday morning.  Just a little generation Friday, but they have run it all day both yesterday and again today, Sunday.  Projection for Monday is low unit in the morning then two units on at 7:00 a.m.  Then three at 8:00 a.m.  It will drop back to 2 units at 9:00 and then back to a low one for eight hours.

Darrell on the water last Sunday morning with Hugh from Florida.  They had a really good day on the copper dun and copperhead black midges.  Hugh had a nice 17 inch brown in his catch.

Monday Shawn and Jackson from Texas spent the middle of the day on the water with Stan.  Jackson is a very good 14 year old fly fisher.  They had a really good day on the P&P midge, crackleback and tiger tail.  The only negative that day was the 40 mph wind!   Carolyn was out with Mike from Texas and they too had a very good day; mainly stripping the holographic green crackleback.

Katilyn's first - 11/25/14

Katilyn’s first – 11/25/14

Carolyn had a wonderful day Tuesday.  She had the opportunity to take Katilyn and her grandfather, Jack, out for half a day.  Katilyn is nine years old and this was her first time for trout with a fly rod.  Fun day for everyone.  The bite was good and Katilyn landed her trout on the P&P midge with a copper dun dropper.  We even let Jack catch some fish.

Wednesday, Stan took Jim, from Springfield, and his friend Andrew, from California, out for half a day.  Good day for these two guys on the big ruby with the black midge dropper.  The water was running and was up and down all morning.  Kind of a blustery cold and windy morning.  Hugh (fished with Darrell on Sunday) brought a friend Ron this time and they spent the morning on the water with Darrell.  Another good day for Hugh.  He and Ron caught fish on the big ruby and a black copperhead midge dropper.  Carolyn took soup and Ron and Kathy from Louisiana out for the day.  It was a good day for these two on the #16 black midge dropped under the big ruby and later in the day on the high bank down from the Lookout Island, the blue poison midge dropper.  Kathy’s best of the day was a nice 17-1/2 inch rainbow.

Dale - 11/28/14

Dale – 11/28/14

Gina had one of her regular regulars, Dale and his wife Lisa out Friday.  Good day for Dale on the JQ streamer, a soft hackle and the P&P midge.  Best and most fun of the day was stripping the streamer.  Lots of bumps and plenty of hookups!  Since 2007, Brenda and her son, Brandon have fished with Stan on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  This was their best year ever, and almost every fish was on the P&P midge.  This was probably one of their warmer years too!

A Break in the Weather…and Fishing is Good!

Sunday, November 23rd, 2014

Whew!  Glad we are out of the deep freeze.  Too early to be in the 20s and 30s!  Some rain the past two days, but temperatures in the 50s and 60s make that tolerable.  Looks like normal temperatures through the Thanksgiving week…..upper 40s and 50s.  Yeah!

Generation has been all over the board, but generally we have seen good wading water sometime during each day.  Let’s hope that’s what we see for the coming week.

Gina & Gail - 11/20/14

Gina & Gail – 11/20/14

Gina on the water Thursday with Denton and Gail from Florida who are moving back to Missouri.   Gina put Denton in the water with a sinking leader and a holographic crackleback and he spent the morning catching fish.  Gail got a quick refresher course and then focused on catching her first trout on a fly rod.  Mission accomplished!  Wonderful day on the water.  Welcome back home to Missouri Gail and Denton!

Saturday, Stan took Bret from Texas out for the morning.  Bret wanted to work on streamer fishing, so Stan set him up with the sinking leader and a holographic green crackleback.  Several hits, misses and a few fish.  Lots of fish on the black midge with the copper dun midge dropper.

Winter fly tying schedule has been posted.  Getting that time of the year to start thinking about tying up flies on those cold, snowy, windy days!

Shiver!

Sunday, November 16th, 2014

33 degrees with a winter weather advisory?  We are expecting a little snow this afternoon, but it will be out of here by this evening.  Tomorrow will be cold and windy!  Sun coming back out on Tuesday and mix of sun & clouds with temperatures in the upper 30s.  Maybe back into the 50s by Wednesday and Thursday.

No generation most of Saturday, but generation all day today.  Tomorrow they are supposed to have the generators off four 7-8 hours in the middle of the day.

Stan on the water this past Monday with Bobbi and Tom from Kansas.  WINDY day.  I think we had 40 mph gusts.  Sure looked like it at one time when I saw the three of them just gliding up the river.  Despite the wind, they caught fish on the P&P.  Jim was out with Bill from Georgia.  They had a good day on the P&P and B-bug.  Carolyn had Sam out for his 2st day of the 2-day school.  Since Tuesday was turning to “pot” weather wise, we opted to do the river first and the classroom second.  Fun day, fun guy.  Before catching, casting was looking good.  After first fish, cast went south……normal.  Sam fished the midges, and stripped both with and without a sinking leader.  It took us a while to get a picture of one of Sam’s fish.  We could hook them, but we could not hand on to them long enough to get a pic.  First fish was pretty nice…into the water it went..second fish was a little smaller…into the water it went.  Finally, we managed to hang onto one and get a picture of a fish and he was the smallest of the day!
