Way Behind!

Thursday, October 9th, 2014

Looks like we are in for some rain.  Projection for tomorrow is 100%.  Sounds pretty positive to me!  Chances again on Saturday with temperatures in the upper 50s or low 60s.  A brief reprieve on Sunday with low 70s and only a 20% change of rain.  Monday back into the 60s and 80% chance.  After Monday, it back to sunshine and 70s.

Generation seems to be tapering off a little.    Steady low flow this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday.   Monday went back to off in the morning and early afternoon then one or two units for just a few hours.  Tuesday, it came on around 3:00 p.m. and they moved some water, but we saw lower flow in the afternoon yesterday and, again, for just about four hours.  Today we are supposed to have some type of generation for seven hours later today.

Am I behind?!?!?  We finished up the Orvis 301 Clinics almost two weekends ago on Sunday, September 28.  Stan had Jo and Jeff from Kansas.  Pretty good day for these guys on the big ruby and a tiger tail.  Water was running all day and

Max - 9/28/14

really got ugly around 2:00 when they fired up everything.  Gina had Cap and Max.  They had a good day on the big ruby and a root beer midge.

Cap - 9/28/14

Cap – 9/28/14

Both are good fly fishers.  Darrell had Max’s father, Mark.  Their best pattern was the JQ streamer.

September 29, Stan Jan and Pam out for what turned out to be half a day.  They had a good day on the black tunghead midge, and the holographic green crackleback.  Pam just went along for the ride and to take pictures.   Tim, from Texas spent the morning on the water with Darrell.  Really fun day for Tim as he has not been fishing for some time.  They caught on the black copperhead midge and a San Juan worm.

September 30, Dana had Roger from Illinois out for half a day.  Good day for Roger on a micro fly, copperhead black midge and white grub.  One of our regulars from Kansas, Mike was out with Stan.  Some quality fish on the the white grub.

Finally made it to October!  Last Wednesday, Darrell took Dennis and Eric out for half a day.  Kind of slow this day, but they did boat some fish on the P&P midge.   Carolyn was on the water on an instructional trip with Danny and Melinda from Texas.  Fun day and fun couple.  We worked on everything, including catching fish.  It was the black tunghead midge, P&P, and holographic green crackleback.

Last Thursday, Dana took Tony and John from California out all day.  Tough day.  Tony’s first time stripping and caught a nice rainbow on the gold varient sculpin.

Bill, from Colorado, spent half a day on the water with Stan last Friday.  Not a barn burner day, but pretty good.  Bill’s best fish was a 17-1/4″ rainbow caught on the black copperhead midge under the big ruby.  One unit was running then they put in.

Joan - 10/6/14

Joan – 10/6/14

Carolyn had Lyle and Joan on the water Monday.  Their son had fished with us before and bought them a guide trip and night’s stay in one of our cabins.  This was Joan’s first time with a fly rod.  Not sure who caught the most, but we fished the black copperhead midge, JQ streamer and holographic green crackleback and had a lot of fun.

Up and Down!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

Still having beautiful weather!  Looks like it is going to stay around for a few more days.  Wednesday has a hint of rain in the forecast and Thursday looks very promising….80% chance.  Temperatures holding in the mid 80s through Wednesday then dropping into the mid 70s into the weekend, and upper 70s by Sunday.

Generation schedule, just like the fishing, has been up and down all week.  Off Thursday, Friday, Saturday mornings, and running all day Monday.  Today it came on at noon with two units.

Not a bad half day last Thursday for Bobby and Alex who fished with Stan.  As a matter of fact, the half day was probably better than the full day.

Saturday, Darrell, Dana and Stan were all out with groups for the Orvis 301

Kevin - 9/27/14

Kevin – 9/27/14

Clinic.  Darrell had Marvin from Kansas.  They had a good day on the P&P.  Dana’s guys, Bill and Kevin, also from Kansas. did well on the tan flashback scud, the white grub and a tan b-bug.   Craig and Chris from Kansas were with Stan for the day.  They also had a good day on the P&P as well as stripping the tiger tail.  Everyone would agree that the morning was pretty slow, but things definitely picked up later in the morning and especially when they turned on a couple generators.

Beautiful Weather!

Wednesday, September 24th, 2014

How refreshing to walk out of the house in the morning to fresh, crisp air.  Days have been clear, warm (70s) with lots of sunshine.  And, it looks like we have more of the same through this coming weekend.  Monday there appears to be a chance of showers in the forecast.

Spastic water the past few days.  Monday we had no generation until 2:00 p.m. when it was to have ramped up.  Full four on like gang busters!  Yesterday it was to have been a low one for the morning then ramp up to eventually two units.  Two units on in the a.m. at a full one or more, then down, then up….and on and on.  Today, so far, it is a low one as projected, but the projection is for up and down water most of the day.  Look forward to seeing what they have in store for tomorrow.

Betsy's 1st trout on fly rod - 9/20/14

Betsy’s 1st trout on fly rod – 9/20/14

Another new fly fisher was born Saturday.  Thanks to her friend Terrie, who booked a trip with Carolyn for the two of them, Betsy is well on her way to becoming a fly fisher!   It was a beautiful, crisp morning with very little wind and no generation.  Just being on the water was a great experience Saturday.  For a weekend, there were not even a lot of fishers on the water so it was very quiet and relaxing….other than a “yeah!” every once in a while when a fish made its way to the boat.  Betsy went from a nice 1st fish to a beautiful 17 inch rainbow as the morning progressed.

Betsy's 17" rainbow - 9/20/14

Betsy’s 17″ rainbow – 9/20/14

Good day for everyone and Terrie had her day on the river too with several

Terrie - 9/20/14

nice rainbows.  Best patterns were the red midge with copper head and black wire, egg, and red San Juan worm.  Gina was on the water with Scott and Cindy from Oklahoma.  They worked hard, had a fun day, and caught a few fish on the black copperhead midge and the red midge.  One really nice fish on when the water started rising, but it just kept right on going.

Sunday, Stan, Jim and Carolyn took a party of six out.  Whew!  Another one of those “tuff” days.  Carolyn’s ladies, Julie and Staci, caught one stripping the holographic green crackleback and a few more hitting the bank with a tan hopper pattern.  Stan had Cole and Fred and they caught their fish on the P&P midge.  Jan and another Fred were with Jim, and they caught several different patterns.

Monday, Wanda went out with Carolyn and for a while thought the river was void of trout.  Finally, we pulled several out of a hole with the egg pattern.  The good news was that it was again, a beautiful day to be on the water.   Ron, from Texas, spent the day on the water with Stan.  Slow bite but they managed to pull off a good day on the egg pattern.

Better day Tuesday with the water running for Gina who took  Kathi and Bill, from Kansas, out for half a day.  Not much nymphing, but did best stripping the crackleback, JQ, and especially the tiger tail streamer.  Another beautiful day!

Good Days and Tough Days….no such thing as bad days!

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Beautiful weather.  Beautiful, sunny day today and temperatures probably in the low 80s.  A little breezy, especially if you’re trying to keep a drift boat in line.  Looks like more of the same all the way through the coming weekend!

No change in the generation this past week.   they have turned on 2 to 4 units every afternoon for several hours.  They were supposed to turn it on today at 1:00 p.m. and so far, (it’s going on 3:00 p.m.) nothing has happened.  Same plan for tomorrow, something coming on in the early afternoon.

David - 9/19/14

David – 9/19/14

Friday, Stan and Carolyn took Penelope and Art, now from Missouri and David, from Texas out for half a day.  What a hoot and what a group.  It was a beautiful overcast day and there was no wind or generation when we put in.  Art and Penelope had a good day on the root beer midge and the P&P.  David was with Carolyn and he also had a good day.  We started with an egg pattern.  After catching fish on that, it was the root beer midge and we finished off the morning fishing the rise with the red San Juan worm.  I think David enjoyed this the most.  He had not yet experienced fishing the rise.  Fast and furious!  Jim had Dave and Beth, from Kansas, on the water all day.  They had a good day on the JQ streamer and the white grub.  This was a first for Beth, so she is progressing through the learning curve of fly fishing.

A Little Color Showing!

Thursday, September 18th, 2014

This rain we have had yesterday and today will certainly help the trees color up instead of turning brown.  I had been noticing quite a bit of brown in the trees, but today I noticed a faint yellow.

Looks like rain chances most of today.  Slight chances tomorrow and increasing Saturday, especially Saturday night into Sunday morning.  Temperatures in the 80s until Monday when we will see the rain chances go away and temperatures in the upper70s to mid-week, then low 80s.

No generation almost all weekend and how great it was!  Lots of reports of great fishing.  Couple of ladies who fish regularly here landed 60 plus fish between them on the black copperhead midge and an egg pattern.  I fished a couple days in a row for just a few hours each day, and had a wonderful time just stripping the holographic green crackleback right under the film.  Erratic strips and stopping every once in a while.  Many of the fish took it while it was just sitting or drifting.  What fun!!

Stan on the water Tuesday with Bob, from Arizona.  Very good day for Bob on the black copperhead midge and Lil ruby midge.   No generation that morning.  That day the fish were tolerating a 6X tipped on the drift.

Yesterday, Stan had Paul from Texas out for the morning.  No 6X tippet yesterday!  They wanted 7X on the drift.   Once they discovered this, Paul started getting hits and fish on the P&P midge.

Beautiful Morning!

Early morning view at "take out"

Early morning view at “take out”

We had some much needed rain last week followed by a couple days of very slight drizzly.  Just enough to let you know there was “heavy dew” in the air.  Yesterday was cool.  I don’t think it got out of the 60s.  Today they are predicting upper 70s.  Monday will see another chance of showers and upper 70s with 70s the trend through Wednesday.  Looks like 80s through the weekend and slight chances of showers for the weekend.

Generation of some type every day last week.  The good news was this weekend.  No generation all day Saturday except for one unit on for about an hour in the early afternoon, and about the same thing will happen again today.  Monday looks like no generation until 1:00 p.m. and not as much as we have been seeing.

Tim - 9/8/14

Tim – 9/8/14

Stan out last Monday with Tim from Texas.  Not a bad day for them on the P&P midge.

Tuesday, Carolyn took Larry and Mel from the St. Louis area out for half a day.  A low two units running when we hit the water.  Made the guys work for their fish.  It was a mix of the size 16 red tunghead midge and lightning bug under the big ruby.

Carolyn took Mark out Wednesday morning.  His wife Fran was supposed to go with us, but she was under the weather.  ‘Hope you’re feeling better Fran!’  Much to our surprise, our best patter was a size 16 gold bead hare’s ear dropped from the big ruby.  Did catch a few stripping the holographic green crackleback.

Good day for Mel and Bill Friday when they went out with Stan.  It was the copperhead black zebra under the big ruby all the way.  They pulled fish with this combo on areas which usually do not fish well.

Couple of good days for Darrell Friday and Saturday.  Friday he took Malcolm and Ed out all day.  Lots of fish for these guys on the black copperhead midge under the big ruby.  Saturday it was Malcolm and Bob.  Another good day, but this time on the brown San Juan worm under the red midge.  The water was off all day Saturday except for a shot of “kick water” around noon.  They said this really helped the fishing.  It was almost like “deja vu” on the river.

Love This Weather!

Monday, September 8th, 2014

Mid 60s this morning when I walked out of the house to go to work!  No wind and a little overcast.  How refreshing!  Should hit the mid 80s today and lower 90s tomorrow.  Rain in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday with Thursday’s high in the upper 70s!  Temps look like lower 90s for Tuesday and Wednesday.  But, definitely a cool down from Thursday through the weekend, and continuing into next week.

We continue to see spastic generation patterns.  Off in the a.m. during the week and coming on somewhere from noon to 2:00 p.m.  On for several hours, then off again until the next day.  However, on the weekend!!!! they are running a low or full one unit all weekend.

Jim on the water last Wednesday with Mike from Kansas.  Good day for Mike on the P&P midge, B-bug, and white worm.  They stayed high as the water did not come on until late in the afternoon that day.  David fished with Darrell and caught fish on the white grub.

Wednesday and Thursday, Stan took George out for half a day each day.   She has been fishing with Stan for ten years.  Not a great day, but good day for George on the P&P midge and stripping the holographic green crackleback.

Mike - 9/4/14

Mike – 9/4/14

Mike, from Texas, spent most of the day on the water with Carolyn.  Fairly slow start early, but things picked up as the day went on,  and Mike caught fish on an egg pattern, San Juan worm, and best of all a 17 inch rainbow on the big ugly.

Jim and Darrell both out on Friday.  Jim took Bill and Jerry from California out for half a day.  Good day for these guys on the white grub.  Darrell had Ed from Kansas out again.  Their pattern was the brown San Juan worm.

Much Needed Rain!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014

Glad to say we received some much needed rain night before last and yesterday morning.  50/50 chance for some more on Saturday.  Otherwise, clear and nice temperatures once we get into the weekend and early part of next week.  Upper 70s to low 80s.  Sweet!

Not much change in the generation schedule.  Still off in the a.m. and cranking by noon or 1:00 p.m.    Today was a little different.  They ran a low one unit for about four hours this morning, then turned it off and it is scheduled to come back on at 1:00 p.m.

Not too busy this past week.  Probably just as well as fishing has been up and down.  Stan out Wednesday with Lester and Mike from Texas.  Best part of that trip was a 17 inch rainbow.  No good pattern.

Saturday, Stan had a couple guys from Illinois on the water.  Good day for them on the size 18 root beer, P&P and rusty midges.  Pretty rainy, foggy day.  As a matter of fact, I think the sky opened near the end of the trip and dumped rain on them as they were trying to get off the river.

Fred and his son, Troy, spent Sunday morning on the water with Stan.  Pretty slow day, but they did catch several fish on the P&P.

James Albert - 9/1/14

James Albert – 9/1/14

Monday, James Albert spent a great day with Darrell which included a brown and a nice 17 inch rainbow.  Best patterns were the white grub, egg and gray scud.

Fun Groups

Thursday, August 28th, 2014

chances of rain tomorrow and possibly Saturday.  Temperatures in the low 90s through the weekend.  Next week looks like mid to upper 90s.  Slight chances for rain Tuesday.

Basically, no change in generation pattern.  Off in the a.m.  Two units on by 1:00 p.m. and all four by 2:00 p.m. for about seven hours.

Stan out last Wednesday with Glenn and Mel from the St. Louis area.  Good days for these guys on the P&P in the a.m. and then the crackleback when the water can on.

We emptied the stable Thursday for a group from Arkansas.  They were holding a meeting at the Chateau and got to enjoy in between meetings.  For the most part, all were new fly fishers with just a few

Carol - 082114

Carol – 8/21/14

who had thrown a rod before.  Stan had Warren & Donna.  I think it was Donna who brought in a 15″ rainbow.  Jason and Heather were with Jim and they brought in a 17″ rainbow.   Carolyn took Carol and Ed.  This was Carol’s first experience fly fishing and she brought in a 15-3/4″ rainbow.  Darrell had John and Cliff, and Dana took Mike and Jack.  Steve and Mark were wading with Gina.

Steve - 8/21/14

Steve – 8/21/14

Of course, they had their contests going for the most fish, the biggest, etc.  It was a win-win day for everyone as it turned out to be a nice day….not too hot yet.  They were not in a meeting!  and most were have a new experience learning how to fly fish!  Overall, the best patterns  were the JQ streamer, P&P midge, black copperhead midge, b-bug and a root beer midge.

Tuesday, Jim, Gina and Carolyn had the opportunity to take a group of veterans with Project Healing Waters out for the day.  Jim and Darrell also had them out again on Wednesday.  We thank each of you for what you have done or are still doing.  We hope you had as much fun as we did!!

Almost forgot, Darrell has Jerry and Gail from Texas out Tuesday.  They had a good morning on a size 14 brown San Juan worm

Gail - 8/26/14

Too Hot!

Sunday, August 24th, 2014

At least two days in a row of 100 degree temperatures and probably at least a couple more in the works!  Maybe into the mid to lower 90s later next week.  Yeah!  Also see a chance for rain maybe by Sunday.

No change in the generation schedule.  Off in the a.m. and on by noon or 1:00 p.m.  Two units to start then 1-2 hours later, two more units.  Lots of water.

Stan on the water half a day last Monday with Bill from Illinois.  Bill caught a few on a black soft hackle, but more were on either the P&P or Lil Ruby midge.  Carolyn had Ron and Sharon out again.  This day, we did not have any really good pattern.  A few on a gray scud, a few on the P&P.  The rise was pretty fast and furious so that did not fish well for us.

Rick - 8/19/14

Rick – 8/19/14

Tuesday it was a group from Texas that we have been taking out almost every year.  I think Stan’s boat took the prize for biggest fish with a 17″ rainbow (Alex and Chase.  Dana’s boat with Rick and David,  took most fish to the boat with mainly on the tan b-bug.  They also landed some on a size 16 tan scud and 18 copperhead black midge.   Lindi and Taylor fished with Darrell and their pattern was the P&P.   Jim had Max and Beau and they took caught on the P&P and a gray scud.

Davis - 8/19/14

Davis – 8/19/14

Carolyn had Renee’ and they caught a few on the black copperhead size 18 midge and the tan b-bug.   Hot day, but a fun time was had by all.
