Good Days…..Tuff Days!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014

We are seeing sunshine this morning!  Haven’t seen much of that for several days.  Partly sunny and 40s tomorrow.  50SA Thursday and Friday and maybe low 60s Saturday and Sunday.  No mention of moisture until late Sunday.  Look promising!

The bizarre generation pattern the past couple days has made catching tuff!  But, unfortunately, that’s life in a tailwater.  Today, along with the sunshine, they turned the generators off at 9:00 a.m.

Stan on the water last Saturday with Mac and Bob, from Kansas.  Despite the gray day and 40 degree temperature, it was a good fishing day for these guys on the big ruby with the black zebra midge dropper.  Jim had Kevin and Steve  out for the day.  They had a good day on the JQ streamer, red midge and red or brown San Juan worm droppers.

Sunday was supposed to have been a little nicer day, but that was a toss up.  Doc, from Oklahoma, spent the day on the water with Stan  Tougher day,  but they pulled several fish on the black midge.  Mac and Bob fished with Jim Sunday and they too had a little more challenge.  Best patterns were the JQ streamer, red midge, copper head black midge and red San Juan worm.

Jim out yesterday with dick from up in Springfield.  He wanted to work on techniques and did catch a few fish on nothing on particular.  Four units going when they started and it never really settled anywhere.  Lots of ups and downs all day.

I Know…I’m Behind On Fishing Conditions!!!

Sunday, November 30th, 2014

Great weather we have been having the past couple days, except for the WIND!  However, I think it is coming to a screeching halt tonight and into Monday.  Hit mid 70s today and the forecast for tomorrow’s high is 32 degrees!  Can you believe that!  Plus, we might get some periods of freezing drizzle in the a.m.  Good news is back into the 50s by Wednesday and possibly low 60s by the weekend.

Lots of wade time last Monday and a little time Tuesday afternoon.  Generation all day Wednesday and Thursday morning.  Just a little generation Friday, but they have run it all day both yesterday and again today, Sunday.  Projection for Monday is low unit in the morning then two units on at 7:00 a.m.  Then three at 8:00 a.m.  It will drop back to 2 units at 9:00 and then back to a low one for eight hours.

Darrell on the water last Sunday morning with Hugh from Florida.  They had a really good day on the copper dun and copperhead black midges.  Hugh had a nice 17 inch brown in his catch.

Monday Shawn and Jackson from Texas spent the middle of the day on the water with Stan.  Jackson is a very good 14 year old fly fisher.  They had a really good day on the P&P midge, crackleback and tiger tail.  The only negative that day was the 40 mph wind!   Carolyn was out with Mike from Texas and they too had a very good day; mainly stripping the holographic green crackleback.

Katilyn's first - 11/25/14

Katilyn’s first – 11/25/14

Carolyn had a wonderful day Tuesday.  She had the opportunity to take Katilyn and her grandfather, Jack, out for half a day.  Katilyn is nine years old and this was her first time for trout with a fly rod.  Fun day for everyone.  The bite was good and Katilyn landed her trout on the P&P midge with a copper dun dropper.  We even let Jack catch some fish.

Wednesday, Stan took Jim, from Springfield, and his friend Andrew, from California, out for half a day.  Good day for these two guys on the big ruby with the black midge dropper.  The water was running and was up and down all morning.  Kind of a blustery cold and windy morning.  Hugh (fished with Darrell on Sunday) brought a friend Ron this time and they spent the morning on the water with Darrell.  Another good day for Hugh.  He and Ron caught fish on the big ruby and a black copperhead midge dropper.  Carolyn took soup and Ron and Kathy from Louisiana out for the day.  It was a good day for these two on the #16 black midge dropped under the big ruby and later in the day on the high bank down from the Lookout Island, the blue poison midge dropper.  Kathy’s best of the day was a nice 17-1/2 inch rainbow.

Dale - 11/28/14

Dale – 11/28/14

Gina had one of her regular regulars, Dale and his wife Lisa out Friday.  Good day for Dale on the JQ streamer, a soft hackle and the P&P midge.  Best and most fun of the day was stripping the streamer.  Lots of bumps and plenty of hookups!  Since 2007, Brenda and her son, Brandon have fished with Stan on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  This was their best year ever, and almost every fish was on the P&P midge.  This was probably one of their warmer years too!

A Break in the Weather…and Fishing is Good!

Sunday, November 23rd, 2014

Whew!  Glad we are out of the deep freeze.  Too early to be in the 20s and 30s!  Some rain the past two days, but temperatures in the 50s and 60s make that tolerable.  Looks like normal temperatures through the Thanksgiving week…..upper 40s and 50s.  Yeah!

Generation has been all over the board, but generally we have seen good wading water sometime during each day.  Let’s hope that’s what we see for the coming week.

Gina & Gail - 11/20/14

Gina & Gail – 11/20/14

Gina on the water Thursday with Denton and Gail from Florida who are moving back to Missouri.   Gina put Denton in the water with a sinking leader and a holographic crackleback and he spent the morning catching fish.  Gail got a quick refresher course and then focused on catching her first trout on a fly rod.  Mission accomplished!  Wonderful day on the water.  Welcome back home to Missouri Gail and Denton!

Saturday, Stan took Bret from Texas out for the morning.  Bret wanted to work on streamer fishing, so Stan set him up with the sinking leader and a holographic green crackleback.  Several hits, misses and a few fish.  Lots of fish on the black midge with the copper dun midge dropper.

Winter fly tying schedule has been posted.  Getting that time of the year to start thinking about tying up flies on those cold, snowy, windy days!

Shiver!

Sunday, November 16th, 2014

33 degrees with a winter weather advisory?  We are expecting a little snow this afternoon, but it will be out of here by this evening.  Tomorrow will be cold and windy!  Sun coming back out on Tuesday and mix of sun & clouds with temperatures in the upper 30s.  Maybe back into the 50s by Wednesday and Thursday.

No generation most of Saturday, but generation all day today.  Tomorrow they are supposed to have the generators off four 7-8 hours in the middle of the day.

Stan on the water this past Monday with Bobbi and Tom from Kansas.  WINDY day.  I think we had 40 mph gusts.  Sure looked like it at one time when I saw the three of them just gliding up the river.  Despite the wind, they caught fish on the P&P.  Jim was out with Bill from Georgia.  They had a good day on the P&P and B-bug.  Carolyn had Sam out for his 2st day of the 2-day school.  Since Tuesday was turning to “pot” weather wise, we opted to do the river first and the classroom second.  Fun day, fun guy.  Before catching, casting was looking good.  After first fish, cast went south……normal.  Sam fished the midges, and stripped both with and without a sinking leader.  It took us a while to get a picture of one of Sam’s fish.  We could hook them, but we could not hand on to them long enough to get a pic.  First fish was pretty nice…into the water it went..second fish was a little smaller…into the water it went.  Finally, we managed to hang onto one and get a picture of a fish and he was the smallest of the day!

What Happened?

Tuesday, November 11th, 2014

Yesterday it was sunny, in the upper 70s, with a 40 mph wind!  Today it partly sunny, upper 30s and a stiff wind.   Not looking like sun bathing days in store for us over the next 6-7 days.

Great past four days of very little generation.  Today, of course, is another day and we have seen generation all day.  Tomorrow’s projection is more of the same….generation all day.  Should be one unit mid day, but back to 2 units by evening.

Vanessa - 11/3/14

Vanessa – 11/3/14

Jim on the water last Monday with Rob and Bruce from Illinois.  Fairly tough day and the guys are pretty new to fly fishing.  Caught some fish on the white grub, brown San Juan worm and ruby midge.  Stan had Bryan and Vanessa from Kansas out for 1/2 a day.  This was Vanessa’s first time with a fly rod and she did well.  They caught fish on the P&P, copper dun and big ruby midges.

Thursday,Darrell and Carolyn took some guys from Tennessee out for half a day.  Darrell had John and Steve and Carolyn took Doug.  Doug had  fished with us earlier this year and came back for more.  Slow start, but it wound up to be a really good day for Doug on the lightning bug or

size 16 black midge under a big ruby.  Darrell’s guys caught some on a gray scud.  Generators on all day.  Jim and Stan took a group out all day  from Mississippi.  Jim and Mike went with Jim and Mike’s wife, Christine, went with Stan.  The guys had a good day on the red midge, copper headed black midge and the miracle scud.  Christine had a

really good day on the P&P or black copper headed midge under the big ruby.

The River Runners Women’s Fly Fishing Club came in Friday.  Some got here early enough to fish a little Friday, but everyone was here to fish Saturday.  If you were near the river, you probably heard these ladies.  It was a magic day for fishing.  Everyone caught several to lots of fish, mainly stripping the holographic green crackleback in the deeper water or stripping the pumpkin crackleback in the shallow water.  Also pulled a lot with a small gray scud in the shallows.  What a day!

Jerry and Sheila from Springfield, fish with Carolyn Sunday morning late.  Wanted it to warm up a little.  Slow day, but did pull several nice fish on either the pumpkin crackleback in the shallows or a variety of streamer patterns in the deeper water using the sinking leader.  Sheila recently hurt her wrist so she wasn’t up to throwing a lot of line.  She fished various midges and caught fish on the black zebra and P&P.

Seeing Some Nice Browns

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

Weather has gone from OMG (upper 20s) the other morning to possibly the lower 70s today!  Guess it’s that time of the year.  Yesterday was a nice, sunny day, and we are seeing more of the same today.  However, according to the weather man, we should expect rain tonight into tomorrow morning.  Thursday and Friday look like sunshine with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s.  Slight chance of rain on Saturday with temperatures both days in the upper 50s.

Generation has been up and down…..what new?!  Off most of Saturday and on all day yesterday.  However, it was low enough most of the day to do some wade fishing in various area.  So far to day, it is off.  Supposed to have been on this a.m. for about four hours.

Jim on the water Saturday with John and his son Josh.  they had a good day on the white grub.

Both Jim and Stan are out today so we’ll see how fishing is when they get in.  Have seen and heard of several nice browns being caught up by the Hatchery.  Various patterns, but several of the guys are fishing the worm brown San Juan worm and the chamois worm.  Also reports on the gray scud.

Cold Weather Sneaking In!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

We have had several days this past weekend and week of nice weather.  Today is beautiful and I think tomorrow is projected to be in the 70s, so once last nice day before we start cooling down.  Friday and Saturday looks like 50s , but moving into the 60s by Sunday through the rest of the week.  Really, just more seasonal weather.  We’ve been luck this Fall.

Generation off the past two days.  Ran non-stop the the previous four days.  Tomorrow’s projection has not yet been posted.  Let’s hope for very low or no generation.

Pete and Bella - 10/24/14

Pete and Bella – 10/24/14

What a fun day I had last Friday.  Pete and Ellen took our two-day fly fishing school in 2007.  They both fell in love with fly fishing and have been fly fishing ever since then.  No surprise there!  They recently decided that they wanted their grand daughter, Bella, to get an introduction to fly fishing, so they spent the day on the water with me last Friday.   What a neat young lady!  Before the day was over, she was casting, mending and getting a great drift (even with 2-3 units running), recognizing a strike, setting the hook and playing the fish like she had been doing it all her life.  I really think Pete and Ellen have a new fly fishing buddy to take along on their trips.   Gina had a fun day with a couple of her regulars, Marlene and

Marlene - 10/24/14

Marlene – 10/24/14

her brother Craig.  They fished the JQ streamer, San Juan tan worm and a pink micro San Juan.

Mike and Jan didn’t get enough of Carolyn on Thursday (really, Jan didn’t catch enough fish!), so they went out for half a day more on Saturday.  Water running that morning, so we fished the UV gray scud with a black copperhead midge dropper.  Hooked a few below Lookout Island on the holographic green crackleback, but probably did best with the black size 16 midge on the high bank drifting out.  Darrell had Pat from Oklahoma on the water for about 2-1/2 hours.  Pat had a wedding or meeting to go to at 10:00 a.m. but had to go fishing!  Doug and Laura were on the river with Dana.  They caught a few on the cerise San Juan worm.

Monday, Bob fished with Stan all day.  One of those tough days.  Good quality fish, but they worked hard for them.  Big ruby and the P&P were their patterns for the day.

Stan - 10/28/14

Stan – 10/28/14

Stan and Sally from Georgia took a half day trip with Carolyn on Tuesday.  Once we could find some moving water, we caught fish on the root beer midge or some form of it (holographic red body with black wire spiraled around the body and a copper tunghead).  Slowed down where we were, so rowed upstream to below the root wad and tied on a P&P.  Back to catching again.  Stan caught a nice 18 inch rainbow up there, and they both had a good number of hook ups using this.

I have been seeing some pictures of really nice rainbows and browns being caught up in the Hatchery area.  One picture of a beautiful brown caught this morning.  I believe he said it was 16 pounds.

Fun Days On The River

Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Some nice weather the past few days.  Looks like more tomorrow and into the coming week.  80s tomorrow, then 70s for a few days with 60s over the weekend.

Pretty solid generation the past three days.  Projection for tomorrow is more of the same.  We’ll just have to wait and see what the week brings.  Goods news for today was that they kept it at a level that was wadeable in some areas.

Colin - 10/19/14

Colin – 10/19/14

Scott and his son, Colin, spent last Sunday morning on the river with Carolyn.  We worked hard for a respectable day.  Colin is a fairly new fly fisher, but he throws a nice line and is well on his way to becoming a good fly fisher.  Best patterns were the tiger tail and the black copperhead midge.

Monday, Stan took Jim, from Virginia, out for the day.  One unit on almost all day and it was a good day for them.  Best patterns were the P&P, big ruby, and peach egg.  Darrell’s guys, Mike and Nick also had a good day Monday.  The ruby midge was their ticket for the day.

Sharon - 10/21/14
Sharon – 10/21/14

On Tuesday, Sharon from Kansas scratched one more thing off her “bucket list”.  She had wanted to learn how to fly fish, so she spent the morning on the water with Carolyn learning the roll cast, regular cast, knots and even catching a few fish!  Fun day with best patterns being the copperhead black midge, the holographic green crackleback and an egg pattern.  Think she likes it!

Stan had Chris from Illinois out Wednesday.  Good day for these guys on the P&P and copper dun midges.

Doug and James fished with Stan all day Thursday.  Good day for these guys too on the P&P and black copperhead midges.

Friday was a little tougher day.  Heard from some of the fishers out that day that it was very good early….before 8:30 a.m., but went south after that.  Of course, about the time Carolyn hit the water with Mike and Jan.  We pulled off a respectable day, but can’t say any one pattern was best.  Started out great…I thought.  Mike picked two fish right off the bat with the tiger tail.  After that, no more hits for him but Jan started catching on the black copperhead midge.  After that, I think we threw the whole fly box at them!  Gina has Mike from Iowa out for the morning and I think they tried a little of everything.  Their best patterns were a rock green soft hackle, #18 grey scud and the black copperhead midge.

Looking A Lot Like Fall Out There!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014

Last weekend was just down right miserable.  Fortunately, we have since has some nice, warm, sunny days.  Today is no exception.  Sun is shining and we are expecting upper 60s.  Tomorrow through Wednesday, looks pretty much with temperatures in the low to mid 70s.

What can I say about the generation schedule?  Off most of the week during the day, then running all day yesterday, today and I think, tomorrow!!!  So much for the weekend fishers.  However, it was as a level yesterday, and is projected to be at that same level today, for waders to get out in various places and throw a line.

Last Saturday was one of those miserable day.  But, we had a few “die hards”

Andrea - 120/11/14

Andrea – 120/11/14

who braved the cold, windy, wet, 52 degree day.   Bobbie and Andrea were out with Gina.  this was Andrea’s first trout on a fly.  Unfortunately, it was too bitter for them, so they came off early….to be continued….on a better day.  Stan had Gary and Dennis out all day.  These crazy guys made it through the day and had a good day on the red midge and L’il Ruby.

Sunday was definitely a better weather day, and Stan took first Kris and Lisa out for the morning.  Lisa drew the right cards, so in the afternoon, it was Lisa and Steve.  Good day for these guys and definitely a good, informative day for all.  They caught fish mainly on the P&P midge almost all day.

Much better day last Tuesday, other than the wind!,  when Stan took Chuck out all day.  Good catching day, on the P&P and black zebra midges.  No generation all day!

Brad - 10/15/14

Brad – 10/15/14

Very good day for Brad from Kentucky on Wednesday.  he spent the day on the water with Gina, catching and learning.  Best patterns were the black copperhead midge, JQ streamer and grey scud.

Thursday, Darrell took Tom, from Kansas out for half a day.  Not a bad day for Tom on the P&P and black copperhead midges.

get-attachment

Patrick – 10/18/14

Got to keep Darrell out of trouble so we put him back on the water Saturday with Patrick.  Good day for Patrick on the ruby and black copperhead midges.  Mike, from Oklahoma had not fished for a

while, so he spent the morning with Stan.  Good day for Mike on the black copperhead and P&P midges.  Dana had a full day with Rusty and Mike.  They caught fish on the JQ streamer, size 12 gray scud and both the holographic green and pumpkin cracklebacks.

Rusty - 10/18/14

I Think It’s Fall!

Sunday, October 12th, 2014

It was definitely a “nippy” day yesterday.  Temperatures in the 50s and drizzle almost all day.  Shiver!.  Might hit 63-64 today, but it has been overcast most of the day.  Forecast for tomorrow is more rain.  We got dumped on Friday and, like I said, drizzle or something almost all day yesterday.  Looks like 100% chances of rain tomorrow, 50% the next day and cool.  These rest of the week is clear with temperatures moving back into the 70s into the weekend.  Next weekend is looking promising

So far, Table Rock not not come up a full foot yet with all the rain we have had.  Still some runoff, so we might make it.  No problem, as we were 7 inches under power pool for this time of the year.  Generation pretty much off the past two days.  One for one hour at noon yesterday and scheduled to come on for an hours this evening.  Schedule says we will see the same pattern for Monday.

Stan on the water last Tuesday with Jack and Mary Kay.  Tough day.  The good

Wayne - 10/7/14

Wayne – 10/7/14

news was that it was a beautiful day, so they all enjoyed the day.  Keith and Wayne  from Illinois, spent the morning with Carolyn.   Caught several fish right off stripping the holographic green crackleback and tiger tail on the 2.6 ips sinking leader.  After catching several fish, we decided to go look for some larger ones.  Pulled some more on the mini sculpin various other patterns, but nothing really big.  Most of the fish we caught, however, were good quality fish, in the 15-17 inch range.  Last nice fish of the day was on the pumpkin crackleback stripping subsurface in shallow water.

Back on the water for Stan Wednesday.  Much better day for Gene from Kansas,

Carolyn - 10/8/14

Carolyn – 10/8/14

mainly on the white grub.  Carolyn and Leon were out with Carolyn.  Carolyn had a good day on the pumpkin crackleback, holographic green crackleback, tiger tail and big ugly.  Carolyn had her “first”….pulling a couple nice fish on a dry…. the big ugly.  Dana took David and his son, Zac out for half a day.  Good days for these guys on the red San Juan worm, pumpkin crackleback and big ugly.  Jim was down stream from all of us with Marg and Price.  they had a good day on the JQ streamer and white grub.

Dale got to use the gift certificate his wife bought him for a full day float with Jim on Thursday.  They had a good day on the JQ, holographic green crackleback and white “thing” grub.  Jim commented that the fish were “picky” at low water and I think we can all agree with this.  Stan had Bob and Waldo from Texas out.  They had a good day on the white grub in the early part of the morning and the P&P later that morning.
