Lots of Water and Lots of Fish!

May 18th, 2023

We have now seen four generators, and for a few days, a couple of gates open, all day every day since early Monday morning.  Yesterday, they closed down the two gates so we are just a four generators, or 13000 cfs +/- every day.

According to the weather forecast, and we know how accurate that is, we have a 95% chance of heavy rain tomorrow (Friday).  After that, very slight chances every day into next week.  Temperatures running in the mid 70s to low 80s.

Zach – 5/16/23

Gina on the water Tuesday with Brian and his son, Zach.  They had a good day with the little ruby under

Brian – 5/16/23

the big ruby and stripping a tiger tail using a sinking leader.  They had fished with Gina around eight years ago and had such a good time they had to come back.

Gary and Barry from Lees Summit fished half a day with Carolyn.  These two guys have fished with us since 2007!  Very good and fun day on the water.  Early part of the day was a little slow, but it finally picked up and they stayed busy bringing fish.  Ruby 2 or black copperhead midges under the big ruby.

Barry – 5/17/23

Gary – 5/16/23

Wednesday, Gary and Barry had to hit the water for another half day with Carolyn.  Another very good day.  Early it was either a cerise or red San Juan worm under the big ruby.  Nothing fast and furious, but again, later in the day fishing started picking up and they were again catching on the ruby 2 or back copperhead midges.  Caught a couple stripping the golden variant leech.  Fun day fishing with these two!  Dana had Alec and Jim on the water.  They were out all day catching on the ruby 2, P&P and black copperhead midges.   Almost forgot, Murphy was out and about.

Murphy

Alec – 5/17/23

Nice, Healthy Fish!

May 18th, 2023

Had a bit of rain last week.  Forecasting slight chances for rain today, tomorrow and even Tuesday.  30% chance for Tuesday.  Wednesday and Thursday are both dry, then slight chances show up again.  Temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

Seeing some generation after all the rain we had last week.  Generators were off Friday until 1:00 p.m. when they were supposed to fire up two units.  Actually fired up three and eventually four.  Two to four units yesterday and again today.  Looks like more of the same tomorrow.

Dean – 5/12/23

Dana on the water Friday with Seth and Natalie from Blue Springs.  They boated a few fish on the P&P midge and a gray scud.  Carolyn had Dean from Kansas out again.  He had a good day…..after a slow start……on a #16 ruby 2 midge.

Doc – 5/12/23

Darren’s guys, Doc and David were catching on micro scuds and midges.

Gina was on the water Saturday with one of her regulars, Dale.  They had a good day on the tiger tail, black midge and sparkle Jan Juan worm.  Fished the full run as they had four units running.

Rainy Day Today!

May 11th, 2023

Rain moved in last night and will continue into this afternoon.  Looks like a little more rain tomorrow morning.  Temperatures will continue in the 80s and slight chances for rain continue through the weekend.

Generation has been spastic.  Yesterday they turned on two units at 2:00 p.m. for a couple hours then ramped it up to four units.  Today, they turned on two units at 10:00 a.m. and it will continue all day at that level.  Tomorrow will be another surprise.

Dana on the water last Friday with Steven and Kyle.  Tough day.  Water came on early and when it did, everything went south.  When the generators came on, it turned the water to junk!  Cleaning flies every cast.  Fortunately, Steven attended the one-day fly fishing school with Carolyn on Saturday and the water was more agreeable.  He managed to get several to the net while working on presentations.

Monday, Dana took one of his regulars for many years, Jeff, and his friend Don.  They had a good day on a gray scud, black copperhead and ruby 2 midges.

Chris – 5/10/23

Wednesday, Dana and Carolyn had a group from Texas, Bill, Chris and Nick.  Dana took Chris and

Nick – 5/10/23

Nick and Carolyn had Bill.  Started out really slow, but we finally found a pocket of fish and Bill had a good day catching on the ruby 2 midge.  Dana’s guys picked a few on the ruby 2.   Darren had Ron from Pennsylvania out wading.  They were catching on a micro scud and a #22 midge.

Fishing Is Good!

May 4th, 2023

We have been having beautiful weather.  Days in the 70s and lots of sunshine.  Unfortunately, we are expecting some weather to move in late tonight and during the morning hours tomorrow.  The weekend looks like 80s and slight (20-30%) chances for rain through next week.

Table Rock is below power pool.  One to two units of generation has been the trend over the past several days.  Today, there is no generation except for a low one unit late this afternoon when they will turn on a low one for only one hour.  Then, it will go back to zero generation.   Unless we get a lot of rain, the trend might be no generation over the weekend.  Just have to cross our fingers and wait and see.

Darren on the water late Friday.  He had Martin and Spencer on the water for half a day.  Very good day for these guys on the rusty, black copperhead and copper dun midges.  Low flow for the trip so they stayed above the boat ramp.

Gary – 4/30/23

Sunday, Carolyn took Gary and his friend Michael out for the morning.  Another very good day.  They were mainly catching on the ruby 2 and rusty midges.

Dana had one of his regular, regulars, George on the water Monday and Tuesday.  They had a good couple of good days on the black copperhead and ruby 2 midges under the big ruby.  Lost a nice one!

Beautiful Days On The Water

April 25th, 2023

Weather has been pretty nice this past week.  Only negative has been the wind.  Yesterday was very windy, but the sun was shining and temperatures were pretty comfortable.  Looking at chances for rain scattered throughout the rest of this week with temperatures in the low to mid 60s.

The past two days we have had a low one unit running.  This is wadeable in several different locations on the river.  If we do not get a lot of rain over the next several days, we will probably see this trend continue for a while, unless it really starts warming up a lot and they need power.

Luke – 4/19/23

Dana on the water last Wednesday with Chris and his son Luke.  Chris and Luke had been on a turkey hunting trip and Luke got his first turkey!  Decided to make the rounds and see if he could get his first trout.  New fly fishers had a good time.  Caught some on the black copperhead midge.

Fred and Ellen took our Orvis Fly Fishing School last year and decided to come back and see how

Fred with 20 incher – 4/21/23

our fishery was.  They spend half a day on the water with Carolyn last Friday.  Good day for the first two and a half hours on the ruby 2 midge.  Then, SWPA turned on three units and fishing went south!  Picked up a couple more on our drift out, but it was tough.

Ellen – 4/22/23

Saturday. They went out again with Dana.  Another good day plus they did not turn on any more units.  This time it was the black copperhead midge.

Monday, Darren had Dennis from Florida on the water.  Erratic generation early in the day so they started at 11:00.  Low one unit going and Dennis had a good day on the

Kathleen – 4/24/23

rusty midge.  Kathleen was out with Carolyn and they caught some fish on the rusty, the ruby and a black copperhead.

Seeing Some Lower Water!

April 16th, 2023

We have had some great weather the past several days.  Thursday, Friday and Saturday were in the upper 70s, low 80s.  Today is a little cool down…mid 60s but sunny.  70s and 80s are the temps for next week with a chance for rain sneaking in Wednesday and increasing Thursday and Friday.  Right now, the weekend is saying 20% chance for showers with temps in the 70s.

Finally seeing some change in the generation pattern.  We have had two units running 24/7 until today, Sunday.  One low unit this morning until 7:00 a.m.  Two back on until noon then a low one unit again until 5:00 p.m.  Monday looks like the normal two units from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.  If we don’t get a lot of rain, we might see some lower generation levels for a change.

Max – 4/11/23

Fishing has been very good.  Darren on the water last Tuesday and Wednesday with James and

Max – 4/12/23

his son, Max.  Very good day for them on the Ruby 2, Little Rusty and Mop Fly.  Full days both days and he kept them busy.

Thursday and Friday, Carolyn took Ben and his wife Christy out for a couple half days.  This was a surprise birthday present Ben gave to Christy.  She had someday wanted to catch a fish on a fly rod and when they walked into the shop, it was a total surprise for her.  Neither had ever fly fished before so we hit the water we spent some time learned the basic roll cast and line management.  Within 50 feet from the boat ramp,

Christy – 4/14/23

Ben had had three hits.  He missed the first two but hook up with the third.  With two units running and Ben having his first fish on a fly rod, he didn’t have a chance.  Played it well for several minutes but the fish got tired of us and made

Ben – 4/14/23

one final run to the bottom.  Snap!  We had a great two half days on the ruby 2 under the big ruby.  Christy caught her first fish on a fly rod and was a happy camper.  She went on to catch several more….they both did.   Happy Birthday Christy!

Some of Jim’s long timers, Dwan and Robert spent all day Friday on the river with him.  They too had a wonderful day on the water.  Nymphing the ruby midge or stripping a JQ streamer were their best ways for bringing fish to the boat.

More Beautiful Weather and Good Fishing!

April 9th, 2023

Beautiful, sunny days.  Forecast for the coming week in 70s and sunny skies.  Slight possibility of rain by Saturday but sunny again on Sunday.

We are finally getting close to normal on Taneycomo.  Less than a foot away from power pool for this time of the year.  All flood gates have been closed and they are running two or three generators during the day.  At this rate, we will be at power pool in about four days.

Dave & 21″ – 4/6/23

Darren on the water all day Thursday with Dave and Steve.  Good, fun day for them catching on the ruby

Steve – 4/6/23

midge and mop fly.  Best fish of the day was a fat 21 incher!

Friday, Darren and Dana took a group from Wisconsin out for half a day.  Another good, fun day.  Darren had Larry and Joe and they were catching on the big ruby with a mop fly.  Emmett was with Dana and they too were catching on the mop fly.

Larry – 4/7/23

Saturday, Dana had Jeremy and his father, Thomas, out for half a day.  This was

Emmett – 4/7/23

Joe – 4/7/23

Jeremy’s first time with a fly rod and he had a fun time.  Ruby 2 was the fly of the day.

Jeremy – 4/8/23

Beautiful Weather!

April 4th, 2023

We had a couple of gorgeous days!  Temperatures in the 80s!  April 1st was a nice day but winds were terrible!  Looks like we will see some nasty weather this evening and maybe into tomorrow morning.  After that, it’s 60s and 70s into next week and probably 80s later into next week.

No change in generation.  We have 4 generators and two gates open 24/7.  This will probably continue on for a while as we are 5-3/4 feet over power pool.

Dana on the water last Friday and Saturday with Cody and Jeff from Oklahoma.  Friday. was good for them and they were catching on the big ruby.  Saturday was the windy day and they would no sooner get a good drift when the wind blew it away!  Hooked some and brought in a few on the black wooly bugger.

Bill – 4/3/223

Monday Dana took Bill and Craig

Craig’s fish – 4/3/23

out for half a day.  Good day for these guys on the ruby 2 midge.

Here We Go Again!

March 25th, 2023

We just finished up with a couple days of RAIN!  Beautiful, sunny day today with temperatures in the 50s.  Mid 60s tomorrow, upper 50s Monday, then back into the 60s Tuesday and Wednesday.  Chances for rain show up again Thursday and into the weekend.

Needless to say, with all the rain we got the past two days, Table Rock has come up 4-1/2 to 5 feet!  And, of course, that means we are way over power pool so they are running three generators and have five gates opened.  We are back to the 15,000 cfs total flow again on Taneycomo.  Just like earlier in the month.  Think we received a little more this time for it will take a little longer to get back to power pool.

Thursday, before the big rain, Dana took Steve and Jeff from Oklahoma out for a half day float.  Really good day for them stripping some black leech patterns.

Good News……Gates Closed!

March 16th, 2023

A couple of pretty nice days yesterday and today.  However, a front is moving in and we will see some rain (yikes!) and cooler weather later today.  Hopefully, we won’t get a lot of rain.   The weekend looks like mid 40s then low to mid 50s Monday and Tuesday.  Wednesday and into next weekend are showing mid 60 with a possibility of some rain on Thursday.

Table Rock is just barely one foot over pool.  Until we get back to pool, we will probably continue to see at least the two generators they are running today continue.  At least we are not seeing 15000 cfs, instead, just a little over 6500 cfs.

Dana was on the water Wednesday with one of his regulars, Brian from Minnesota.  Brian had fished with Dana the week before.  This was a tough day as it was the day they fired up five flood gates.  Brian did get to expand his fishing techniques as what fish they caught was stripping the JQ streamers.

Tuesday, Dana took Ty and his 10 year old son, Tildin out for half a day.  This was Tildin’s first time with a fly rod.  Tildin had several on.  They were catching on the mega form.

Eric from Illinois spent half a day on the water with Jim yesterday.  Good day for them on the big ruby and mop fly.  Eric did well bringing in a nice 24 inch rainbow.
